CCSSM Content Standards:
Count to tell the number of objects:
·       CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.CC.B.4
Understand the relationship between numbers and quantities; connect counting to cardinality.
·       CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.CC.B.4.A
When counting objects, say the number names in the standard order, pairing each object with one and only one number name and each number name with one and only one object.

Understand that the last number name said tells the number of objects counted. The number of objects is the same regardless of their arrangement or the order in which they were counted.

Compare numbers:

·       CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.CC.C.6
Identify whether the number of objects in one group is greater than, less than, or equal to the number of objects in another group, e.g., by using matching and counting strategies.

Summary: This book is about thee friends, a lion, a tiger, and a dog, who compete by trying to see who can gradually balance ten apples on their head.
Rating : * * * * * I give this book 5 stars because it is extremely fun while also teaching students math. Students enjoy counting the apples and watching the silly characters balance apples on their heads, which makes it both educational and engaging. The best part of this book is its use of rhyme, which allows the teacher to flow by the book very nicely.

Classroom Ideas/Lesson Ideas:
You can use this book for various activities. My favorite idea is creating a class book, by printing each student’s face and gluing it on a paper. Each student can be assigned a different number of apples and then they would have to glue their apples on top of their heads. This book is perfect for fall and apple theme.

  1. I love this book! I read this book to my threes’ this month when we were discussing apples. They loved this book I read it more than once. I would often make them count along with me the apples that were on top of the characters heads. I also used the same activity where I glued their pictures on construction paper and made them stamp ten apples on top of their own heads. It is also a great idea to let them choose the number of apples they want and have them count or write down how many apples they stamped.
