PK.OA.1. Demonstrate an understanding of addition and subtraction by using objects, fingers, and responding to practical situations (e.g., If we have 3 apples and add two more, how many apples do we have all together?).
PK.OA.2. Duplicate and extend (e.g., What comes next?) simple patterns using concrete objects.

Content Standards AND Standards for Mathematical Practice:
Look for and make use of structure

Summary: This book reviews the concepts of counting, addition/subtraction, sorting/grouping according to color, and finalizes with the importance of completing patterns. This book allows students to actively engage and participate during read-aloud. The author uses simple and fun language to accommodate all learners including those students who struggle when it comes to completing  patterns.
Rating 1-5 Stars: ***** I highly recommend this book. It is a fun and engaging book which can be used by early preschoolers and children in the second grade. It is self-explanatory making it easy to follow. This book should be considered in all households as it reviews counting, adding/subtraction, sorting, and patterns.
Classroom Ideas: This book can be used in numerous ways. Similarly, to five little monkeys jumping on the bed, on the bed we can have the different colored bears attached with Velcro on the bed (which has been prepared and laminated). A sing along can be singing: “Five little bears jumping on the bed, a blue little bear fell down and bumped his head, now four little bears are jumping on the bed, a red little bear fell off the bed, now three little bears are jumping on the bed, a yellow little bear jumps on the bed….” (As they fall, they can be removed from the bed and one can ask how many bears are left?... Here, we are counting, subtracting, and colors. We can also use manipulatives such as snap cubes and begin patterns of which students must complete.

  1. Hi Jessica,

I like that by using the cover of the book we can introduce the concept of patterns to the students. When I read your “summary of the book”, I thought about the teddy bear color sorting that I’ve seen in the math area. The teddy bear color sorting can be used as a manipulative tool to help the students further understand the concept of patterns and extend their learning by revealing to them that our world is surrounded by patterns.

  2. Hello Jessica,
I like that children will learn patterns by sorting by color. Students can also learn about grouping the teddy bear by colors and by number, like for example learn how to make a 5 groups of five teddy bear to learn how many all together.
